POWERS OF SOUND

I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

OF RESEARCH IN SONORITIES

June 5, 6 and 7, 2019
UFSC - Florianópolis/SC

About the Conference

The 1st International Conference on Research in Sonorities - Poderes do Som is an initiative of the Study Group on Images, Sonorities and Technologies (GEIST), formed by researchers from the institutions UFSC, UFES, IFRS, UFRGS and UFF. The proposal is to promote and update discussions about sound in different countries and its intersections with a diversity of areas of knowledge, expanding the scope of the field of Sound Studies in Brazil, in dialogue with foreign institutions and researchers.

It is with this scope in mind that the Poderes do Som Conference seeks to emphasize sound materialities, whether those that mobilize listening and sound practices, or the devices and artifacts, technological or not, that modulate and enhance what can be accomplished with the sounds. In this first edition of the event – to be held in the format of a Conference at UFSC, between June 5th and 7th, 2019 – it is intended to organize an international meeting that brings together Brazilian researchers and researchers from other parts of the world in several days of discussion , organized into working groups with specific thematic axes, round tables with specialists and invited international researchers and exhibition of sound works of relevance to the themes discussed.

POWERS OF SOUND

I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

OF SONORITIES RESEARCH

June 5th to 7th, 2019
UFSC - Florianópolis, Brazil

About the Conference

The 1st International Conference on Sonorities Research - Powers of Sound is an initiative of the Image, Sonorities and Technology Studies Group (GEIST), formed by researchers from six Brazilian institutions: UFSC, UFES, IFRS, UFRGS and UFF. The initiative seeks to promote and update sound related discussion in different countries and their relations with several knowledge fields, expanding the reach of Sound Studies field of reasearch in Brazil and in dialogue with institutions and foreign researchers.

The possibility of sounds that never stop sounding or sounds that are heard without our being able (or in need) to identify their origins transforms the act of listening in a relation of power. Contemporary society not only fulfills the environment with an incalculable number of new and powerful sounds, but, at the same time, inserts these sounds into chains of production of sense. Sounds work with identities: wether in groups or individually; sounds configure relations of power: among individuals or institutions; sounds unveil historical structures of production; sounds are essential components of the entertainment industry; sounds cause pain and death and pleasure.
The relations between sounds and power is not new, but it acquires both unprecedented and important contours in the current world politics conjuncture. In a moment of ideological fiecing where State and society have been starring violent disputes, sound is an efficient instrument of control and to inflect damage towards people or objects.

Sound Studies have been developing its field through a multidisciplinary perspective, involving areas as diverse as Technology, Audiovisual, Music, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Communication, Economy, etc. More than a research object, the aforementioned areas show that sound ought to be thought of as an instrument of research: as a method of investigation. To understand the contemporary phenomena through different listening models and the relations of power, economy, culture, aesthetics etc. that result in these phenomena is to rethink our own conception of the world. To escape the standard visual perspective through which several fields of knowledge formulate its hypothesis is to allow, at the same time, that different aspects of the object come forth, is to question daily experience in search of new ways to position the investigation.

Having such broadening at sight, the Powers of Sound conference emphasizes the materialities of sound, either the ones that mobilize hearing and soaring practices or of the artifacts and devices that modulate and potentialize what can be accomplished with sounds. For the first edition of the conference – to be held at UFSC, Brazil, from June 5th to 7h, 2019 – we invite researchers from across the globe for a three day discussion, arranged in work groups with specific thematic axis, panels with invited experts and international keynote speakers, and the exhibition of sound performances of relevance to the main theme of the conference.

 Circulation, value

and Exchange in Movement

from music

The work seeks to go beyond the tired metaphor of "flows" to describe how music moves in an era commonly understood as globalized. "Circulation" seems to be a term frequently used today, referring to goods as well as people, an idea with a long history, which harks back to Marxist notions about the movement of money, and is still useful in relation to cultural goods. like the music. Drawing on Marx and anthropologists who have studied value and exchange, this work argues that things circulate because they have value, and circulation therefore manifests itself as constant exchanges - of money, goods, etc. - who constantly (re)make life and social relationships. Radio serves as a case study in this work, especially as an important player in the Southern California indie rock scene. Returning to classical theories about audience as a commodity (Dallas Smythe), which remain useful if released from a strictly Marxist framework towards a broader theorization of value, it is argued that Smythe's conception is related to the idea of exchange, and that its insights can be extended and renewed from radio and other mass media to think about the circulation of contemporary digital media.

Circulation, Value, and Exchange in the Movement of Music

Abstract:

This paper is an attempt to move beyond the common metaphor of “flows” to describe how music moves in an era commonly thought of as globalized. “Circulation” seems to be a term in frequent usage these days, referring to people as well as goods, an idea has a long history going back to Marxist ideas about the movement of money and is still useful with respect to cultural goods such as music . Drawing on Marx and anthropologists who have studied value and exchange, this paper argues that things circulate because they have value, and circulation therefore manifests as constant exchanges—of time, money, goods, and more—that constantly (re)make social life and relations. Radio serves as a case study in this paper, especially as it plays an important role in the indie rock scene in southern California. Returning to classic theories of the audience as commodities from Dallas Smythe, which are still useful if released from a strict Marxian framework into broader conceptualizations of value, I argue that Smythe's conception is predicated in the idea of exchange, and that Smythe's insights can be extended and updated from radio and other broadcast media to the circulation of digital media today.
