Vitória - Espírito Santo:
The city of Vitória is the capital of the state of Espírito Santo and is located in an archipelago made up of 33 islands and a continental portion, in a total area of 93.38 square kilometers. The city's landscapes amaze those who arrive, whether by plane, ship or land. Seven bridges connect the island of Vitória to the mainland. The capital is home to 369,534 inhabitants according to the IBGE population estimate (2021). It is the center of the Metropolitan Region, which includes six other cities: Cariacica, Fundão, Guarapari, Serra, Vila Velha and Viana, summing an estimated population of 2,033,067 million. It is strategically located in the Southeast Region, close to the country's major urban centers: 413 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro, 378 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, 743 kilometers from São Paulo and 838 kilometers from Salvador. Founded in 1551, it is a historic city that still has some buildings from the colonial period. Vila Velha, next to the capital, is the second oldest city in the country and is home to the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Penha, one of the oldest churches in Brazil. Capixaba's cuisine is known throughout the country for its moqueca: a fish stew with tomatoes, onions and annatto, always accompanied by white rice, banana moqueca and pirão. Crabs and Torta Capixaba, prepared with various seafood, are also noteworthy.
UFES:
The Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) is the only free public university in Espírito Santo, located in the south-eastern region of Brazil, and covers the most diverse areas of knowledge. Occupying a total area of 13.8 million square meters, UFES has its main headquarters in Vitória, the capital of Espírito Santo, on the Goiabeiras campus, where most of the IV CIPS - Silêncios events will take place. Ufes offers undergraduate classroom and distance learning, as well as postgraduate courses (academic and professional masters and doctorates), with around 25,000 students. It plays a significant role in scientific and technological research and university extension, as well as providing various services to the academic public and the community, through facilities such as the theater, cinema, art galleries, museums, language teaching center, libraries, planetarium and astronomical observatory, auditoriums, sports gymnasium and other sports facilities. It also offers health services through the Cassiano Antonio de Moraes University Hospital (Hucam), which is a reference in medium and high complexity care.
The Arts Center:
The UFES Arts Center was created in June 1971, from the incorporation of the School of Fine Arts of the state of Espírito Santo, created in 1951. It is made up of the Departments of Visual Arts, Art Theory and Music, Architecture and Urban Planning, Industrial Design and Communications and Media. It features nine undergraduate programs - Architecture and Urbanism; Fine Arts; Visual Arts; Design; Music, Bachelor's Degree; Music, Teaching Degree; Cinema and Audiovisual, Journalism and Advertising - and four postgraduate programs: Master's and Doctorate in Architecture and Urbanism, Master's in Communication and Territorialities and Master's in Visual Arts. Doctoral courses in Communication and Territorialities and in Visual Arts are being implemented. The activities of the IV CIPS - Silences will take place at the Arts Center, especially in the following buildings: Cemuni II, Cemuni IV, Cemuni V, the Administrative Building, Bob (Multimedia) and the University Theatre. TRANSPORT
Bus:
there is an integrated bus system throughout the city and metropolitan region, Transcol. A large number of lines serve the Goiabeiras Campus, with the inscription UFES on the front sign. What to do in Vitória and the surrounding area:
Vitória and the metropolitan region have a number of places of interest for rest, leisure and culture. Tourist activity has been growing in recent years. Here are some suggestions:
Beaches in Vitória:
- Curva da Jurema: Located from the Yacht Club to Shopping Vitória. The sea is cold and calm and ideal for water sports, with a narrow strip of sand for jogging and walking. Visitors can admire the landscape from one of the kiosks with covered areas, where Capixaba cuisine is served. The area also has a promenade, night lighting, snack bars and an extensive recreational area, as well as the facilities for tennis, basketball, volleyball and football at Praça dos Namorados.
- Ilha do Boi: Besides the calm and clear waters, Praia Grande or Praia da Esquerda is a natural nook with shade provided by trees. Praia Pequena or Praia da Direita is nearby. The sea is cool, calm waters provide families with pleasant moments to spend with their children. It is a meeting point for the city's young people.
- Ilha do Frade: Although it is small, the beauty and shade of its chestnut trees is a major attraction for its visitors. It has small natural pools among the rocks, ideal for children, as well as an open sea for those who prefer to take long swims. Located on an island, access is via a ladder or by walking among the rocks.
Beaches in Vila Velha:
- Praia da Costa: This is one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Espírito Santo and the most famous in Vila Velha. It has a long stretch of sand and clear waters, a long promenade with a cycle path, bars, restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlors, hotels and kiosks.
- Itapoã: This beach is the continuation of Praia da Costa and is located 3 km from the city center. Its fishing potential has made it one of the main fishing spots in the state. Its main attractions are boat trips to the islands of Pituã and Itatiaia, as well as trawling. It has an extensive stretch of sand that allows for the practice of various sports, such as volleyball, footvolley and sand soccer. Numerous bars and restaurants can be found along the beachfront, which is famous for its infrastructure of kiosks and sports facilities.
- Itaparica: Itaparica beach is a sequel to Itapoã beach. It is very popular and has a large number of kiosks. It is 3.5 km long and has high, strong waves, making it a popular destination for surfing, bodyboarding and kitesurfing. Itaparica has hosted several national championships in these sports, attracting large crowds.
- Barra do Jucu: A fishing community and an area with a large presence of Congo Capixaba - a religious and festive Afro-indigenous manifestation from the state of Espírito Santo - in the metropolitan region. It has beaches such as the mouth of the Rio Jucu and Concha, both with rough seas.
Beaches in Serra:
- Manguinhos Beach: Famous for its gastronomy and bucolic atmosphere, Manguinhos features the ambience of a fishing village and has several restaurants.
Guarapari: Guarapari, affectionately known as the “Health City”, is a destination famous for its beaches of rare beauty and therapeutic properties. With more than 50 beaches, the city caters for all styles. It has been recognized as the National Capital of Marine Biodiversity, standing out for the richness of its marine ecosystems.
- Paulo César Vinhas Park: The park aims to preserve a continuous strip of restinga, one of the Atlantic Forest's most threatened ecosystems. It pays homage to the biologist Paulo César Vinhas, who died in 1993 for taking action against sand extraction in the region. There is a great diversity of environments in its area, such as lagoons, dunes, flood plains and restinga formations. The park is home to endangered species of flora and fauna, as well as endemic species. The Caraís Lagoon is its main attraction.
Rua da Lama (Mud Street): A bar area for young people, located near the Goiabeiras Campus. The bars are open until the early hours of the morning.
Historic Center of Vitória: A neighborhood with an intense cultural and bohemian life, it is home to bars, concert halls, live music and samba venues, as well as museums and cultural centers. In the Historic Center you can find buildings in an excellent state of preservation, dating from the first half of the 16th century, when they were built. Some of them are: Santa Luzia Chapel, São Gonçalo Church, Rosário Church, Metropolitan Curia and Anchieta Palace. Other architectural points of interest are: the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Caramuru Viaduct, the Carlos Gomes Theatre, Sesc Glória, Moscoso Park and the Capixaba and Vila Rubim Markets. You can also see the Port of Vitória in the area.
Vila Velha Historical Center: A region of great historical attraction, home to the Penha Convent, the Vila Velha Memory House and the Rosário Church. At the little beach, you can see the city of Vitória and take the ferry to Praça do Papa, a 10-minute ride. There are several restaurants in the area.
Paneleiras de Goiabeiras: The craft of making clay pots is the work of the paneleiras de Goiabeiras, which has been passed down through generations for over 400 years. The technique used has Indian origin and is characterized by manual modelling, open-air firing and the application of tannin dye. This knowledge was appropriated from the Indians by settlers and descendants of enslaved who came to occupy the edge of the mangrove swamp. The Goiabeiras clay pot, torta and moqueca capixabas are icons of local identity. The craft of the potters was recognized as Brazilian Cultural Heritage, registered in 2000 in the Book of Knowledge of the National Artistic Heritage Institute - IPHAN.
Ilha das Caieiras: Located on the northwest side of the island of Vitória, its occupation began with the first grantee of the captaincy of Espírito Santo, Vasco Fernandes Coutinho. Originating as a fishing village, the community has a close relationship with fishing, shredding crab and gastronomic tradition, activities that have consolidated the local culture. The region is known for being home to the Desfiadeiras de Siri and typical cuisine restaurants. Visitors can see several natural monuments from here. Ilha das Caieiras is one of the city's gastronomic hubs. Bars and restaurants are available from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6.30pm and on Sundays from 9am to 3pm.
Santuario Basílica de Santo Antônio: A building designed and built between the 1950s and 70s. The perfection and symmetry of the forms is reminiscent of the church of Our Lady of Consolation, a 16th century temple in the city of Todi, Italy. The Pavonian priests enlisted the help of the residents of the Santo Antônio neighborhood in a joint effort to build the shrine, which has now been elevated to a basilica. It was dedicated to the city's former patron saint.

There are restaurants that charge by the kilo on the Goiabeiras campus, but they are far from the Arts Center, where the IV CIPS – Silences will be held.
